Gun-Free Zone: Four Dead, 37 Wounded in Chicago Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO — A 24-year-old man shot in West Pullman Sunday night was at least the 37th person shot in a violent three-day stretch in Chicago.

Four people were killed on the first weekend of the year to feature a stretch of warm weather, and the violence began as the school day ended on the warm Friday afternoon when a teenage girl, Gakira Barnes, was fatally shot in Woodlawn.

The most recent shooting occurred around 10:15 p.m. Sunday evening. A 24-year-old man was walking in the 12200 block of South Emerald Avenue when he heard shots and felt pain, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

The man was shot in his right foot and taken to Roseland Hospital in stable condition, Alfaro said.

In the 2-1/2 days between those two shootings, three people were killed and 36 other people were wounded in shootings.

Four other people besides Barnes were shot Friday afternoon. That night, Shannon Mack, 34, was fatally shot while sitting in a car in South Shore. Overnight Friday into Saturday, 15 others were wound in shootings.

Between Saturday night and Sunday 15 people were wounded in shootings. Early Sunday morning, Corey Brownlee, 32, of Washington Park was fatally shot on his own block and Joshua Martinez, 20, of Gage Park was shot to death in a possibly gang-related fight.
