(CNSNews.com) – The United States faces “fundamental fiscal challenges” stemming from the growth in spending for Social Security and major health care programs,” CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf told a gathering in Washington on Tuesday. The rising cost of those programs leaves Americans with “unpleasant” choices to make, but the sooner they’re made, the better, he said: “So we have a choice as a society to either scale back those programs relative to what is promised under current law; or to raise tax revenue above its historical average to pay for the expansion of those programs; or to cut back on all other spending even more sharply than we already are,” Elmendorf said.”And we haven’t actually decided as a society…what we’re going to do. But some combination of those three choices will be needed.”Elmendorf said there are various ways to proceed: “But they tend to be unpleasant in one way or another, and we have not, as a society, decided how much of that sort of unpleasantness to inflict on whom.”He noted that many Americans have paid Social Security taxes for decades, expecting to get benefits in retirement. But the money people paid years ago was used to fund other government activities. So, “If one wants to change those programs, then giving people a lot of warning about that — those changes coming — would be especially important,” he said.Elmendorf said the nation’s main fiscal challenge is not short-term deficits, but “the very high level of debt” over the long term:”And a high level of debt will ultimately crowd out capital investment and slow accumulation of capital and slow the growth of wages and incomes. It also reduces the flexibility for policymakers to respond to future crises that arise.”So it’s the high level of debt and the growing deficits in the long-term. The reason why action today would be beneficial is because if you — we want to make changes in programs for retirees or changes in the tax code, it’s better to make those with a warning. One wants to set — one wants to make changes. One wants to set them in motion early, even if their full effect won’t be felt for many years.”Elmendorf said Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid and Obamacare will be much more expensive relative to GDP in future years because health care costs are rising, subsidized health insurance is expanding, and the population is aging: “There will be a third more people receiving Social Security Medicare benefits a decade from now than there are today,” he noted.”And with those three factors at work, that handful, just a handful of very large programs, is becoming much more expensive.”Elmendorf was interviewed at The Atlantic’s 2014 Economy Summit in Washington. – See more at: http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/susan-jones/cbo-director-important-give-advance-warning-about-coming-changes-social#sthash.mgi4jPs9.a6lEUDvA.dpuf
If you remember during the great debate on healthcare, we were told time and time again that Obamacare would insure anywhere from 30 million to 48 million uninsured people? Without spending 2.7 trillion dollars, these people would be one sickness away from ruin. Guess what? With less than a month to go, only 4.2 million previously uninsured have signed up. And that includes people who signed up but never paid for their policy. Insurance companies have been pretty consistent in reporting a 15% rate who do not purchase insurance. That leaves 3.6 million people. And of those 3.6 million people, how many are getting free Medicaid? My guess would be between 1/3 and 1/2.
Reports from the White House Council of Economic Advisers predicted 46 million:
“Perhaps the most visible sign of the need for health care reform is the 46 million Americans currently without health insurance.”
The census bureau took it a step further and said 48 million. The numbers have either been highly or Obamacare isn’t as loved as they claim. I call it a toss up.
The democrats were counting on a huge number of young, healthy people signing up, but there’s no incentive to. Many will not be able to afford it and those who can, are better off not buying because if they get sick, they can then buy a policy. If they don’t get sick, they pay the $95 tax. In fact, the insurance companies say there are a large amount of the elderly signing up. They need a lot of medical care, which will drive the prices even higher.
We could have bought $5,000 policies for all of them for 21 billion a year. And everyone else could have kept their insurance they liked. We destroyed the best medical in the world for this?
Ask any liberal, and he’ll tell you that the worst insult you can heap on any President is comparing him to Richard Nixon. Meet the newest inductee to the Nixon Missing Tapes Hall of Fame — the still-much-beloved of liberals Bill “Bubba” Clinton.
Steven Portnoy (no relation) of ABC News reports:
Among the thousands of pages of documents released by the Clinton Library recently, two had this tantalizing notation at the top: “Tape One, Side One.”
That stamp appeared on transcripts of two conversations Bill Clinton had behind closed doors with aides inside the Oval Office. They included the president’s ribald remarks on race, frank talk about gays, and even how to prepare for Y2K. And they were captured on cassette tapes.
“All of which raises the question,” Portnoy wonders aloud:
Might we hear Clinton in his famous Arkansas twang musing that Rep. Tom DeLay was “probably” to blame for the notorious dragging death of a black man? Could we hear Clinton admit that talking about gays caused his poll numbers to drop? Or that he wishes he could advise Americans to buy shotgun shells before the millennium?
The answer, sadly (albeit somehow unsurprisingly), is no. When ABC News requested copies of the tapes, officials at the Clinton Library said they couldn’t find them. A library official named Diane LeBlanc wrote in an email to ABC:
The creation of this particular audio tape, its use, and any transcription [aides] chose to make were all done by White House staff prior to the transfer of Clinton Presidential records to NARA [the National Archives and Records Administration], and as such we simply don’t know much more than what can be found by searching the holdings as our Archival staff has done.
But at least there are transcripts, and as anyone can tell you, White House transcripts are the next best thing to being there. These documents can’t be doctored (right!).
Nevertheless at least one of the transcripts seems to be the authentic rough cut. In it, Clinton is wrestling with the question of whether to mention the beating death of Matthew Shepard, a gay man, in a speech he is planning. He reveals to his aides (on paper) that, according to his pollster, his “numbers go down” every time he mentions gays in a speech.
It has finally come to this…there are now liberal groups that have resorted to actually holding contests with cash prizes in order to get young people to sign up for ObamaCare. Yep, that’s right folks. This should come as a big surprise. After all, if you listen to the media, ObamaCare is such a gigantic success.
Sure, the community organizer in chief has had to issue dozens of illegal delays, changes, suspensions, exemptions, and postponements to the law. Sure, the Regime continues lying and exaggerating their enrollment numbers every chance they get. Never mind the fact that the Regime has expanded waivers and exemptions to just about anyone who wants one because the law itself has become a ‘hardship’ for many people. Even many of the liberal allies and proponents of this law have openly abandoned their top three promises; these are the same top three promises that they used to sell the program. Also, let’s not forget the fact that as little as 5 percent of the uninsured population has chosen to participate in this program.
But never mind all of that. The outside liberal advocacy groups now want us to believe that ObamaCare is smashing success. This is why they are now resorting to actually holding contests with real cash prizes in an effort to get young people to sign up. One such group, Young Invincibles, is holding a sweepstakes that will award a prize of $1,200 for those who download their healthcare app or submit a card in the mail. They hope that by using the app, these folks will be more likely to learn more about ObamaCare and sign up.
Personally, I would think that the more people know about ObamaCare, the less likely they are to sign up. This age group, those between 18 and 34, is a very important demographic for the success or failure of the program. Experts have estimated that ObamaCare needs to have about 40 percent of their enrollments come from this demographic in order to offset the higher costs of paying for older and sicker enrollees. In other words, young people will end up paying high prices for coverage they will use less so that others can enjoy the benefits of their labors (and money).
With only 25 percent of the ObamaCare recipients coming from this age group, there is no way the Regime will meet their original goal. So….they have done what they always do and discarded this. Hence the cash prizes, which ‘might’ be enough to cover first year ObamaCare costs. Of course, the problem then becomes that even the lowest priced plans end up with high deductibles. So, you might be able to pay $50-70 per month, but then you would be looking at a $10,000 deductible before that insurance pays anything at all.
If this sounds decidedly unaffordable, then you are not alone. No worries, though, since our intrepid community organizer in chief has your solution. He has just finished telling Latino families that they should dump their cable and cell phones in order to be able to pay for ObamaCare. Great ideas from our Communist in chief.
So, what do YOU think? Contests to get the young people into ObamaCare…will this work? Should the young folks be happy about being asked to basically support everyone else through huge ObamaCare deductibles and out-of-pocket costs?
Desperate for attention, racial injustice pot-stirrer Jesse Jackson has targeted tech companies for his belief that they exclude minorities in hiring, board appointments, and start-up funding. He plans to lead a delegation to disrupt the Hewlett-Packard annual shareholder’s meeting today to bring attention to this non-issue. Should be fun.
“Technology is supposed to be about inclusion, but sadly, patterns of exclusion remains the order of the day,” Jackson wrote in a letter released Monday to Apple, Twitter, Facebook, Hewlett-Packard, Google and others tech giants.
Really? Technology is supposed to be about inclusion? Where in any definition of the word does it say that? Technology is about innovation and simplification. It is a non-political, non-social arm of science that is beholden only to the laws of physics and bound by the human imagination.
Earl “Butch” Graves Jr., president and CEO of Black Enterprise magazine, made an equally stupid statement regarding tech’s lack of diversity. He said, “Jackson is shining a light on the fact that technology companies don’t come close to hiring or spending what is commensurate with the demographics of their customers.”
Just because someone buys (or steals) an iPhone doesn’t mean they are qualified to program the operating system or design an app. And that really is the point in all of this. If there is a lack of diversity at tech companies it is because there are a lack of qualified minority job applicants. Tech companies are the most progressive, socially conscious firms in the world. They aren’t excluding blacks and Latinos; there just ain’t enough of them around that can do the job.
It’s not just the message Jackson is trying to send that makes no sense; his targeting of Hewlett-Packard is also a mystery. The company spent in 2013 nearly $1 billion on 500 minority business enterprises in the U.S. and an additional $500 million with businesses owned by women.
“HP is the largest company in the world with both a female CEO and CFO, and nearly half of our leadership team and board of directors are women and minorities. Additionally, nearly 50 years ago, HP established the first minority business program in the United States,” noted HP executive vice president Henry Gomez.
Way to pick a fight with a company that has a proven track record of diversity, Jesse. Maybe he should at least target a tech company that has outrageously discriminatory hiring practices. Of course the problem here is that no such company exists. Once again Jackson is inventing racism where it doesn’t exist.
This entire episode brings up an interesting point about entitlement. Why do blacks feel they are owed a certain percentage of employment in every field based solely on the percentage of the population they hold? It is an affirmative action mindset that makes blacks demand that they should get jobs they aren’t qualified for to level the playing field. Hiring someone just because they are black is as racist as not hiring someone just because they are black.
The field is level and everyone has an equal chance to succeed. Those that have talent and drive will rise to the top. This applies to everything including the tech industry and professional sports. I don’t see Jackson complaining about the lack of diversity in the NBA.
If Jesse really wants to address this perceived problem, he should first look to the broken families that fail to teach their children the value of education and hard work. Then, get on a K-12 education system that is more interested in social engineering than teaching math and science. Lastly, he needs to take a long look in the mirror for giving the black community an excuse to underachieve by blaming all of their problems on racism.
Alexander Panteleymonov beaten by Svoboda party members
March 19, 2014
Russia, Turkey and Cuba reported the beating of Alexander Panteleymonov, the director of Ukraine’s state-run NTU television company, but the story is apparently not important enough to air on American corporate news networks.
Panteleymonov, as the video shows, was beaten by Svoboda party fascists and forced to resign his office for daring to air the signing ceremony of Crimea joining the Russian Federation after a popular referendum held last weekend voted to secede from the country.
Igor Miroshnichenko, a Verkhovna Rada MP infamous for an antisemitic slur leveled against Ukrainian Jewish actress Mila Kunis, shoved and punched Panteleymonov.
“Write your resignation! Sit down! I told you, sit down!” the gang of ultra-nationalists yelled at the TV network boss. “You are feasting in my Ukraine!… Here is a paper, pen, write the resignation now quickly, you animal… You Muscovite (a derogatory word for Russian) garbage!”
Svoboda party’s spokesman Alexander Aronets admitted on his Facebook page the Svoboda thugs forced Panteleymonov to resign.
The incident provides further evidence Ukraine’s junta consists in large part of fascists no different than Nazi brownshirts who, prior to Hitler’s ascension to power, attacked, beat and murdered the political opposition. Many were interned in concentration camps and later executed.
Although the corporate media has, to a limited degree, reported on the ultra-nationalists and fascists sharing power in Kyiv, they have minimized this with coverage designed to portray the junta as democrats struggling against Russian domination.
